Everything You Need to Know About Alloy Wheel Refurbishment

If you own a vehicle that has alloy wheels, then you probably already understand the importance of keeping them looking their best. Not only can scratched alloy wheels affect their aesthetic appeal, but can also decrease the value of the vehicle overall. Although it might seem like a small inconvenience at the time, this can naturally have a massively detrimental impact down the line if you decide you want to sell your vehicle. Fortunately, if an alloy wheel does incur damage, there’s a simple solution that can get them looking brand new again in no time at all. This blog will take you through everything you need to know about alloy wheel repair.

What is Alloy Wheel Repair?

If any of your alloy wheels have been scratched against a kerb or are showing obvious signs of damage, alloy wheel repair is an effective way to get them back to their former glory. Conducted by a professional, experienced engineer, the repairs will rid the wheels of any scuffs or scratches that have developed on them over time. Generally, alloy wheels can only be repaired once or twice during their lifespan, but you should always consult the engineer carrying out the repairs, as they will be able to best advise you on the conduction of your wheel.

How are Alloy Wheels Repaired?

The first thing your engineer will do is remove the tyres from the wheels, after which they will be thoroughly cleaned with soap and water. This eliminates any grime or dirt that could damage the wheels further during the repair process. Next, both sides of the crack will be grinded to remove any contamination, therefore providing the opportunity for a cleaner weld.

Next, the wheel will undergo a Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) weld on the inside and outside. Once the weld is complete, it will be as strong as a new wheel. Finally, the weld is dressed back on the inside of the wheel, which allows the tyre to re-seal correctly. Once this is complete, the tyres will be reapplied, and you’re free to enjoy your newly repaired alloy wheels!

Will Alloy Wheel Repair Add Value to My Vehicle?

This all depends on the age, make and model of your vehicle. In most cases, the answer is yes - the new alloy wheels will add a fresher appearance to the vehicle and thus make it more appealing. If the vehicle is higher in value anyway, or it’s a “sportier” model, this is also likely to add significant value as these tend to be features that people who have some engine knowledge tend to look out for. Regardless, it is safe to say that it can never hurt to have your alloy wheels revamped.
